As a child of immigrants, this is not the American dream I was sold on

Pro-Trump supporters storm the U.S. Capitol following a rally with President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021 in Washington, DC. Samuel Corum/Getty Images My mother and her family immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in the 1980s in pursuit of opportunity. The attempted coup at Capitol Hill threatened the fabric of the "American dream" for millions of immigrants who've come to the US for a better life. I used to think this was the beauty of being an American: if I studied hard, played by the rules, and treated people equally, I too would be a success story. But instead, I'm left wondering how we got to this point.  Bianca Silva is a writer and photographer based in New York City. Her work has appeared in TIME, HuffPost, The Haitian Times and the BBC. Airbnb CEO Warns Travel 'Will Never Go Back To Normal'

Airbnb CEO Warns Travel 'Will Never Go Back To Normal' Airbnb Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky told Reuters Thursday that domestic travel trends will never be going back to the way it was before the virus pandemic.  Chesky spoke with Jonathan Weber, Reuters global technology editor, via Zoom, who said business travel is shifting to leisure travel because technologies like Zoom can make teleconferencing possible.  He uncovers the next big trend in travel, which by the way could start this summer - indicating that people aren't going to be travel to the top largest 50 cities in the world and stay in crowded hotels - what they're going to do is "many people will travel by car - some will travel by plane - and they're going to travel to thousands of smaller communities. And many of these communities are going to be smaller cities and or even rural areas."  Chesky said, "farm stays are huge right now." He said mos

Islamic zealotry becoming more evident among Palestinians

Image
A musical event that took place at a historical site located several miles east of Jerusalem may have revealed what the Palestinians have constantly tried to hide, that is the depth of radical Islam and its role in forming their identity. It is no secret that religious zealotry motivated Palestinians from all over the West Bank to rush to “ defend the sanctity ” and emphasize the religious nature of an archeological site that was supposed to be a tourist attraction. Muslims have always wanted to believe that Moses’s tomb is located inside the expansive building which is located in the Judean Desert, while both Jewish and Christian tradition teaches that Moses was buried in the Moab valley opposite to Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. In a phone chat with a Catholic Palestinian deacon from Jerusalem, he blurted out that “ the mosque’s presence in one of the corners of the massive facility has blinded their eyes and has made them perceive it to be

"Simply Insane" Central Banks Attack Cryptocurrencies

Image
"Simply Insane" Central Banks Attack Cryptocurrencies Authored by Daniel Lacalle, The main central banks of the world are increasing money supply in an uncontrolled and unjustified way in what is so far the largest transfer of wealth from savers to governments ever.  While savers see their deposits disappear with negative real rates and devaluations, while central banks seek at all costs to impoverish their neighbors through devaluations to benefit deficit-ridden states, financial repression continues to generate responses from citizens, who seek to safeguard their savings from the monster confiscator: devaluation and inflation. The main factor that has led Bitcoin to skyrocket is the global fiat currency debasement.  In a year where headlines talked about a weak dollar, the US currency has strengthened relative to 67 currencies. It is not weak dollar, but weak fiat currencies. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum become as an

Desert Locust situation update: Locust swarms destroyed an estimated 200,000ha of cropland in Ethiopia in 2020, marking the worst invasion the country had seen in 25 years: Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan, Uganda, Eritrea and Yemen have swarms arriving

Image
Credit FAO The Somali Regional State has announced that locust invasions are causing widespread destruction to crops and grazing lands in all but one of the region's administrative zones. The infestation, which has affected 10 zones in the region, is spreading quickly to border areas, according to Abdullahi Yusuf Adem, deputy head of the bureau. The swarms have formed as a result of favourable environmental conditions brought on at the end of November 2020 by cyclone Gati in the Indian Ocean, the strongest tropical cyclone to have ever made landfall in Somalia. The heavy rainfall provided ideal breeding grounds for the desert pest both in Somalia and in Somali Regional State. Immature swarms are concentrating along the eastern side of the highlands in Harar, Oromia Regional State, according to reports by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The Organisation, which warns of swarms moving into the country's southern regions, has also observed infestations

"Heightening Risk Of Accidental Nuclear War": Russia Withdraws From Open Skies Treaty After US Exit

Image
"Heightening Risk Of Accidental Nuclear War": Russia Withdraws From Open Skies Treaty After US Exit Authored by Kenny Stancil via CommonDreams.org, In a development that experts say increases the risks of military confrontation, Russia announced Friday that it will withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty , an international pact credited with helping to prevent nuclear war since it came into force in 2002. Russia's withdrawal from the treaty—which allows more than 30 party states to conduct unarmed observation flights over military facilities in each other's territories— follows US President Donald Trump's decision last year to ditch the pact . "Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the US withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty last year 'significantly upended the balance of interests of signatory states,' adding that Moscow's proposals to keep the treaty alive after the US exit have been cold-shouldered by

Peer-Reviewed Study "Did Not Find Evidence" Lockdowns Were Effective In Stopping COVID Spread

Image
Peer-Reviewed Study "Did Not Find Evidence" Lockdowns Were Effective In Stopping COVID Spread Liberals may be able to argue with Fox News or even Republican politicians. But what happens when a peer reviewed study comes out of one of their coveted and prestigious universities in California potentially showing that their collective reaction to Covid may have been completely worthless and, as a result, may have done exceptionally more harm than good? Along those lines, it seems like a good idea to point out that a new peer reviewed study out of Stanford is questioning the effectiveness of lockdowns and stay-at-home orders (which it calls NPIs, or non-pharmaceutical interventions) to combat Covid-19. The study's lead author is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford. "The study did not find evidence to support that NPIs were effective in preventing the spread," according to Outkick , who published the report.
