Why Can't Congress Do the Math?

Imagine you have no money, because you have lost your job. Now you have to borrow enough from the bank to pay your mortgage and buy food for your family. When you go to the bank you actually borrow enough to get you through the next four months, but instead of saving the extra cash, you go out and buy a television, some clothes, a new sofa and put a down payment on a car. Should you have considered saving this money to pay the mortgage and buy groceries the next few months or have fun blowing it on things that are not necessary now?
