Republicans Hold 4% Lead as Americans Want Better Economy Not More Abortions

Republicans have taken the lead among undecided voters in the latest poll since July, which was released by USA Today and Suffolk University.

In July’s poll, registered voters favored Democrat candidates by 4 points while 16% remained undecided. In October’s poll, only 6% remained undecided, while Republicans had gained a 4-point edge on Democrats.

Inflation and the economy remain top concerns for voters, 31% of whom ranked inflation and the economy as the most important issue. This percentage rose to 37% in the October poll. Even after the Dobbs decision, the percentage of voters who ranked abortion as a top concern rose by only two points. The percentage of voters who ranked immigration as most important rose slightly by one point between July and October.

The poll also found that Americans are slightly more optimistic about the country’s future. In July, 15% said the country was on the right track. In October, that percentage rose to 24%. Those who believed the country was on the wrong track lowered from 76% to 66%.

In tandem with the increase, Biden’s voter approval rose in the October poll. The percentage of those who disapproved fell from 56% to 53%, while approval rose from 39% to 44%.

Despite a slight uptick in optimism, voters still gave a pessimistic assessment of the state of the country. Two-thirds of voters used “awful,” “chaotic,” or “sadness” to describe the country’s condition.
